Mohammad Razai is an award-winning interdisciplinary scientist, physician, writer and poet.
His scientific research has covered topics ranging from covid-19, vaccination, and the human monkeypox virus to tackling the causes and drivers of racial health inequalities.
He has published poetry in leading literary journals and magazines.
Dr Razai completed his undergraduate medical training at University of Cambridge in 2014. He also holds a BSc from University College London. He was awarded a distinction for his MA in Applied Medical Humanities from Birkbeck University of London in 2022.
Mohammad was born in Kabul to a Hazara family in the winter of 1986. He lost several family members, including his father, during the uprisings against the soviet-backed regime. His family became refugees several times during the ensuing civil war. He came to the UK as a refugee at 14.
He gained a place to study medicine at Cambridge University and graduated in 2014. He is practising as a physician in London.
Dr Razai’s achievements have been recognised with several prestigious awards including the John Maddox Prize for Standing Up for Science by Sense About Science and the scientific journal Nature.
